The Crochet Theory of Building

Title: The Crochet Theory of Building Subtitle: What my kid’s hobby taught me about GitHub, AI, and becoming a builder Tags: #ai #design #github #productivity #buildinpublic #consistency Social Share: “I finally understand why GitHub’s contribution graph is so addictive. It’s crocheting. Let me explain.”

My 9-year-old recently started learning to crochet. While watching her begin from nothing, just a bunch of tools and kits, my thoughts segued into something I recently introduced into my daily routines—something that added a little depth to my quest for consistent progress over perfection: GitHub!

I’ve been coding since 2006. HTML, CSS, markup, accessibility. But GitHub was always developer territory for me (until recently).

Although I had strong foundational knowledge of versioning and Git’s philosophy, I could not (until recently) be that person on the team who could effortlessly collaborate with teammates actively using Git. I wasn’t pushing code daily (there was no need for me to!). So I became THAT designer—the one who creates the HTML/CSS and then relies on developers to “integrate it and push to the repository.”

There was always a gap.

Claude Code is bridging that gap now!

Claude Code changed that forever, and it’s just one thing out of the ever-growing list of changes this tool is bringing into my life!

The embarrassment of not knowing the exact command.

Now I can ask Claude Code to “raise that PR” or “do a stash” or “create a branch”—and it just… does it. No Googling. No Stack Overflow. No waiting for a developer to help.

I started pushing code in January 2026. And I haven’t stopped since.

At least one commit. Every. Single. Day.
GitHub is crocheting.

Think about it:

  • Small, consistent actions
  • Visible progress over time
  • A history that never lies
  • Something tangible emerging from daily effort

That green contribution graph on GitHub? It’s the same dopamine hit as watching a scarf grow stitch by stitch.

GitHub—Not a coding platform anymore!

With AI leveling that barrier for anyone to contribute to a platform as massive as GitHub, it’s a clear message of the sweeping change in the tech world—it’s a builder’s world. There are no designers, developers, product managers. The mindset shift is real and the identity shift is happening right before our eyes.

The Right Use of AI

AI isn’t going to make you a better designer or developer.

AI is going to make you a BUILDER.

But only if you add that secret ingredient: CONSISTENCY.

Install Claude Code. Start small. Push something today. Then tomorrow. And the day after.

Watch those green squares accumulate. Feel the liberation that comes with being part of a universal building community.

This is what crocheting and my 9-year-old have taught me this weekend!

Good luck.
